Slender grey or brown snake with a yellow ring around the neck, round iris. A white throat with white marked belly. The neck ring can be white or orange, open or closed or even completely missing.

The scales are curved upwards (keeled) in the centre. A long tail that starts from the rectum, visible on the belly side. This can also be seen on a shed skin.

Day-active and likes to swim. It hunts mostly near water banks for amphibia. Likes to sunbathe and sleeps under rocks or logs.

Not poisonous to humans, the poison is only used to consume the prey.

≈ The NATRIX TESSELLATA (Dice snake) has a rather pointed head and the eyes and nose pointed upwards, it also can have a colourfully checkered belly. 
≈ The NATRIX MAURA (Viperine water snake) has often more clear markings and its size is less (up to 100 cm) 
≈ The ZAMENIS LONGISSIMUS (Aesculapian snake) is without keeled scales.
