Large brown monitor, banded tail and strong legs well suited for digging. They walk in a distinctive manner, their tongue is visible now and then.

The dig their own burrow, when threatened they enlarge themselves by taking air in their cheeks, wag their tail and bite.

This is the largest monitor of Southern Africa.
