Large brown monitor, banded tail and strong legs well suited for digging. They walk in a distinctive manner, their tongue is visible now and then. The dig their own burrow, when threatened they enlarge themselves by taking air in their cheeks, wag their tail and bite. ⇔ l. 100-180 cm including the tail. syn. Legavaan, White-throated monitor This is the largest monitor of Southern Africa.
