Brown lizard with round body, chubby neck, blunt head and relatively short legs. A pattern of light markings in 2 rows on the back. Belly ♂ orange with black markings and young have a yellowish even-coloured belly. Lives northerly up to the Arctic. Mostly on the surface but will climb for a good sunbath. Able swimmer and finds food and shelter in the water. Prefers moist areas in vegetation, peat and woodland. Keeps the eggs inside the body until they hatch, hence the name. ⇔ l. 16-18 cm of which 50-60% is tail. syn. LACERTA VIVIPARA LA: ≈ Very similar to the LACERTA AGILIS (Sand lizard) and the PODARCIS MURALIS (Wall lizard), but this one is the smallest.
