A green back, white throat and belly. The vocal sac is white and a little transparent, croaks are sonorous. ♂ becomes lighter in colour in mating season, the colour can change to yellow-green. In northern Europe, it is browner. ⇔ l. 5-6 cm syn. PELOPHYLAX LESSONAE This is the smallest green frog. LA: ≈ Difficult to differentiate from other frogs, very similar to the PELOPHYLAX RIDIBUNDUS (Marsh frog) and RANA ESCULENTA (Edible frog). The difference mainly in colour vocal sac, sound and size. The brown variety has its eyes wider apart, whiter vocal sac and a clearer back pattern.
