Black bumblebee with orange-red hind tip, leg hairs are black. ♂ has a light yellow nose and sometimes a yellow band over the breast. The body is hairy.

The colony has 100-300 members, nests are made in piles of rocks or cavities.

The hives have a queen. First to hatch are the ♀ taking care of the nest, in summer ♂ and new queens follow that perform a mating ritual flight. The fertilised queen survives the winter, all others die off in autumn.
