Large shiny blue-black beetle, short separated shield with a large hind body. ♀ noticeably larger than ♂, antennae of thickening half way which is a distinguishing feature of this beetle. Feeds on plants. When disturbed an oil-like substance is excreted. ⇔ l. 10-35 mm Larvae climb into a flower and then wait to let themselves be taken by bees into the hive to feed on bee larvae and honey. It needs to be the correct solitary bee type, so chances are slim, which is why there are so many eggs. LA: ≈ The MELOE PROSCARABAEUS is black with less gloss and deeper dents in the head, neck and cover plates.
