Yellow-green to blue-green round grasshopper, with long probes, banded back, black back of the head and a broad kinked neck shield in the shape of a saddle. The neck shield is slightly raised to accommodate the spongy golden-yellow wings. The wings are no longer sufficiently developed for flying. 

It can not fly and is a moderate jumper, but a good climber. He lives in shrubs and small trees where the green colour camouflages. Lives of insects and other creatures and sometimes also plant parts. ♀ and ♂ both chirp and do so by ironing their left wing over the right wing.

The name comes from the saddle-shaped neck shield. 

This is the Western Saddle Grasshopper, who lives in and around France. The EPHIPPIGER EPHIPPIGER (Eastern Saddle Grasshopper) cannot be distinguished in appearance, but it is geographically separated to the east of Italy, in the Balkans to Turkey. In many literature both species are still seen as the same usually under the name E. ephippiger. That is why both areas are on the location map. 

LA: ≈ The EPHIPPIGER CRUCIGER has a black and white striped back and is especially on the French mountain slopes.
