Slim bright red or straw-coloured dragonfly. ♂ has a red abdomen without black spots, a brown back with vague light shoulder stripes and the front wing veins are red. ♀ has a straw-coloured abdomen, yellow breast and the front wing veins are yellow. Both sexes have yellow legs with thin black stripes. Young animals still have a yellowish to orange coloured abdomen. ⇔ l. 35-40 mm Preference for very sunny watery areas with much vegetation. LA: ≈ The SYMPETRUM VULGATUM (Vagrant Darter) has a club-shaped abdomen. ≈ The SYMPETRUM STRIOLATUM (Common darter) has much more black on legs and body.
