Multi-coloured duck, the ♂ with a green cap, black back, brown breast, grey flanks and white lines. The beak tip is black with red and yellow markings at the base. The ♀ is brown with a lighter coloured belly, white eye edges and a green-black-white speculum (feathers on the flanks). These ducks have sharp talons which are used during tree landings. Nests are often in trees from which the chicks need to find their way to the water by themselves. ⇔ l. 47-54 cm Originally from North American, kept as ornamental birds and escaped wood ducks have established a population in Europe. LA: ≈ The AIX GALERICULATA (Mandarin) ♂ has an orange-brown back with elevated back feathers and a white breast.
