Large round speckled body with a small blue head and a red helmet-like crest. Young can fly almost immediately whereas adults run rather than fly when alarmed. Apart from during mating, seen mostly in small groups in fields and suburban areas. ⇔ l. 53-58 cm Guinea-fowl can consume massive quantities of ticks, which might otherwise spread Lyme disease. Originally from southern Africa, nowadays widely bred for meat and eggs.
