Pinkish brown bird with conspicuous white, black, red and yellow markings. A fluffy crest can be seen on the head.  Black eyeline and throat. Grey rump, red under tail ending in yellow. 

The name refers to the red stains on the wings, looking like sealing wax.  Both genders are similar though ♀has fewer red markings. Despite its bright colours, difficult to spot since it prefers staying in high trees. However in winter when hungry it is easier to spot between the bare twigs searching for berries. In summer it eats mainly insects. This bird will migrate southwards when food is scarce.
