Rather large brown bird of prey, no gender differences, large variations in colouring, from very dark to almost white under surface. The top surface is a single colour with darker quills. The undersurface of tail and wings has bands ending in a dark rear edge. Black bill with a yellow dot and yellow legs. Often seen in high exposed places such as dead trees alongside fields and roads. It beats its wings and glides alternately during flight. Seen often quarrelling with crows since they are hunting for the same food. Its call sounds a bit like a cat. ⇔ l. 51-57 cm LA: ≈ The PERNIS APIVORUS (Honey buzzard) seems completely white due to its light under surface. ≈ The MILVUS MILVUS (Red kite) and MILVUS MIGRANS (Black kite) have a forked tail ≈ And the CIRCUS AERUGINOSUS (Western marsh harrier) has a straight tail.
