Shiny black bird, sometimes with a blue-purple sheen, the large beak is slightly curved. The beard like throat feathers and wide tail are clear identifiers. Monogamous and often re-uses the same nest overlooking its hunting territory. It is a bird of prey but eats carrion as well. Non-migratory bird, mostly forming territorial pairs, but outside breeding season large groups are formed. ⇔ l. 60-65 cm As large as a buzzard and therefore the largest crow and largest songbird of Europe.
