Black water bird with red beak and forehead. The back is dark brown and the belly is grey-brown, in between there is a white band. The rump is white, the beak tip is yellow and it has long green brown toes without webbing. Searching for food mainly on shore. Often seen near water with other water birds, never easy to approach closely as they fly or run away with a wagging tail. ⇔ l. 32-35 cm
