Small grey gull with a white head and breast and dark eyes. The wings are grey with a black tip, the tail has a black rear edge. In summer it has a green-yellow beak and pinkish legs. In winter grey brown markings appear on its head. Beak can develop a dark tip or ring, the legs become greyer. Young adults are brown marked and have a grey pink beak with a black tip. It takes 2 years to develop adult markings. In large flocks on beaches and fields, found year around on the North Sea. ⇔ l. 40-46 cm syn. Mew gull Breeding in colonies in northern Europe, in winter other coastal areas, are visited. LA: ≈ The LARUS ARGENTATUS (Herring gull) is much larger and has yellow eyes, pink legs, and a red beak marking. ≈ In winter it looks like the more common CHROICOCEPHALUS RIDIBUNDUS (Black-headed gull) with its white head but there is a marking behind the eye.
