Small grey gull with a white head and breast and dark eyes. The wings are grey with a black tip, the tail has a black rear edge. In summer it has a green-yellow beak and pinkish legs. In winter grey brown markings appear on its head. Beak can develop a dark tip or ring, the legs become greyer. Young adults are brown marked and have a grey pink beak with a black tip. It takes 2 years to develop adult markings.

In large flocks on beaches and fields, found year around on the North Sea.

Breeding in colonies in northern Europe, in winter other coastal areas, are visited.

≈ The LARUS ARGENTATUS (Herring gull) is much larger and has yellow eyes, pink legs, and a red beak marking. 
≈ In winter it looks like the more common CHROICOCEPHALUS RIDIBUNDUS (Black-headed gull) with its white head but there is a marking behind the eye.
