Black and white, crow-like with white belly and shoulders, long black tail. In the sunlight the black can seem purple, blue or greenish, both genders are same. The young develop the sheen later. They partner for life and after breeding they form a family. Young magpies sometimes stay together later. ⇔ l. 44-46 cm They are known in legends, mostly as thieves but scientific research shows they don't steal objects but are very curious. However, during hatching, they sometimes take eggs from other nests without causing much harm to songbird populations. An inquisitive and beautiful bird. LA: ≈ Looks a bit like the CORVUS CORNIX (Hooded crow) which is black grey instead of black and white.
