A green back, red crown into the neck, and grey cheeks, breast and belly.♀ has a black stripe below the eye which is black edged red for the ♂, apart from this they are the same. This woodpecker "drums" less and "laughs" more. It moves easily on the ground looking for ants, its main diet, it has a very long tongue for this purpose. The beak is less sturdy than that of other woodpeckers. ⇔ l. 30-36 cm
