A red breast and belly, black head and tail, grey back and wings, white rump and wing stripe. ♂ is bright red, ♀ and young are more brown beige on breast and belly. Very shy, often the white rump is the only thing you will see when it is fleeing. Chooses areas with shrubbery and trees to hide in. Mostly in pairs looking for nuts to be cracked by its sturdy beak. It also eats fruit and insects while breeding. In winter can be seen in small groups. ⇔ l. 14-15 cm LA: ≈ Similar to the common FRINGILLA COELEBS (Chaffinch) which has more orange on its breast and no black head.
