Glowing black with a green or purple sheen, light speckles on its belly and shoulder. In winter more speckled than in summer. The gender difference is difficult to spot; the ♀ has larger feathers with larger markings. Always in groups but in autumn seen in very large flocks over the fields where they launch and land together and can appear like a huge cloud on the horizon. ⇔ l. 19-21 cm It is a migratory bird but in northern Europe, there are always Starlings. The summer residents move to the south in winter while in winter the Starlings from up north arrive.
