Brown black back, white under surface, almost bald light brown head and neck, long dark neck feathers like a collar. Long wings with deep fingers at the end. It walks awkwardly but its flying is superb. Its long bald neck allows it to dig deep into a carcass without the feathers getting stuck. A carrion bird which flies in groups searching for carcasses. Mates for life and builds a large nest where young are fed for 4 months. ⇔ l. 95-100 cm The national bird of Serbia. LA: ≈ The AEGYPIUS MONACHUS (Cinereous vulture) is darker in colour missing he white collar. ≈ The GYPAETUS BARBATUS (Bearded vulture) has thinner and more coloured wings with a striking light coloured head. ≈ The NEOPHRON PERCNOPTERUS (Egyptian vulture) has a yellow-white head, body and wedge-shaped tail and is much smaller.
