Dark back and head, long thin tail, the belly and wing under surface are banded. ♀ is larger, grey-brown back, brown white underside and yellow eyes. ♂ has a grey back and the striped belly is white orange with orange eyes. Young are brown with a brown yellow banded belly. ♂ catch mainly sparrows, tits and chaffinch, the ♀prefers the somewhat larger blackbirds, doves or thrush since she is larger. ⇔ l. 30-38 cm This bird was almost extinct in the late 1960s due to the pesticide DDT. Interestingly, while the number of sparrowhawks declines if its food sources reduce, an increase in the number of sparrowhawks does not impact the number of prey. LA: ≈ ♀ looks like the ACCIPITER GENTILIS (Northern goshawk) but is much smaller. ≈ ♂ has similar markings as the CUCULUS CANORUS (Cuckoo). ≈ Also similar to the FALCO TINNUNCULUS (Kestrel) which has a banded back.
