Brown yellow with darker stripes, belly lighter and a short, blunt crest. Outside tail feathers and wing rear edge are lighter in colour. In contrast to the crested lark, it can flatten its crest. Known for its melodic singing in summer, ♂ ascends silently up to 100m to hover and sing. Prefers open grassy terrain and nests on the ground. Some groups are migratory, but in both cases (migratory and non-migratory) large flocks can be seen in autumn looking for food. ⇔ l. 18-19 cm LA: ≈ Smaller than the TURDUS PHILOMELOS (Song thrush). ≈ The LULLULA ARBOREA (Woodlark) has a visible eyebrow. ≈ The GALERIDA CRISTATA (Crested lark) is not able to lower its crest and sings from the surface or a branch.
