A large owl with long wings and bright black-edged yellow eyes in a white face. Back and wingtips are dark brown and yellow-brown marked. The tail is brown yellow-banded and the belly is very light coloured. Has small ear feathers that can be lowered. Hunts in the daytime in contrast to other owls. ⇔ l. 37-39 cm Breeds only when sufficient food is present and migrates if food is scarce.
