Small chubby owl with a flat head and large bright yellow eyes with a light grey face. Completely brown white marked with a darker back and banded wings. Often standing straight up and can be observed in the daytime but hunts at twilight on beetles, moths and mice etc. Feels at ease in various habitats. ⇔ l. 20-23 cm The national bird of Greece. LA: ≈ Similar to the STRIX ALUCO (Tawny owl) which is much larger. ≈ The GLAUCIDIUM PASSERINUM (Pygmy owl) is much smaller and with a darker back and lighter coloured belly.
