Small grey-brown bird with a red cap and yellow beak, striped tail and white wing bands. ♂ has a black chin and while breeding a pink breast, ♀ has less red on its head and the young are without the red. ⇔ l. 13-15 cm syn. ACANTHIS FLAMMEA They are able to withstand cold and breed up north, they winter in central Europe. LA: There are several subspecies all looking similar. ≈ The CARDUELIS FLAMMEA CABARET (Lesser redpoll) is darker marked. ≈ The CARDUELIS HORNEMANNI (Arctic redpoll) is much lighter in colour and likes it really cold, living in north Europe/Asia.
