Grey-brown back with a white belly, a collar of a black and white band, black split head stripe and a yellow ringed dark eye. Orange legs, dark beak and a dark band on a light tail. Not a coastal bird, it prefers drier open areas with rocks and sand close to a river or lake. ⇔ l. 14-16 cm It is a migratory bird breeding in Europe. LA: ≈ Difficult to separate from CHARADRIUS HIATICULA (Common ringed plover) which has an orange beak and no yellow eye ring.
