Brown with a lighter head, long wings and a straight tail. ♂ a dark brown back, grey-brown wings and tail top surface, the under surface is rust brown variable, fingers are black. ♀ is more even brown with a lighter throat and cap.

Hunts often by flying low over wetland areas looking for small prey.

These are migratory birds wintering in central Africa and South Asia.
