Large rust brown head with a fat grey beak. Dark brown back and tail, pink brown belly, grey neck, black eye ring and beard and a black-edged white wing marking. In summer the colours are brighter. Young birds have a brown banded belly. Thanks to its thick sturdy beak it is able to crack cherry stones. Finds its food on the ground and it is very quick to seek shelter in trees when disturbed. Soft "tjisp" sound. ⇔ l. 17-18 cm
