Small martin with a sturdy head and a short forked tail. The back is black with a blue shine. Under surface and rump are clear white, wings are dark grey. ♀ has broken white markings and in winter can be a little brownish on the breast and belly. Primarily seen flying, nests in colonies often below the eaves of roofs of buildings. ⇔ l. 14-15 cm syn. DELICHON URBICUM LA: ≈ The similar HIRUNDO RUSTICA (Barn swallow) has a longer tail, red face and dark neck marking.
