Small black/white woodpecker with a white belly and under the tail. Only the ♂ has a red cap, the ♀ has a white cap with a black edge. The lower back is black/white striped becoming white speckled bands. The black band surrounding the eye is not closed. 

Well hidden behind leaves in treetops but its call and pecking can be heard. Nests are chopped into hollows of side branches.

Not a migratory bird, but dispersing after breeding.

LA:
≈ The DENDROCOPOS MAJOR (Great spotted woodpecker) is much larger and has a white wing marking, black cap and red rump and neck marking. The young Great spotted woodpecker however initially has a red cap but is already larger.
≈ The DENDROCOPOS MEDIUS (Middle spotted woodpecker) is also clearly larger, has a red cap and a red rump and white wing markings.
≈ The PICOIDES TRIDACTYLUS (Eurasian three-toed woodpecker) ♂ has a yellow black cap and the ♀ has a complete black cap and a white back without bands. See photo LA.
