Large black/white woodpecker with white shoulder markings and white wing markings, a red rump and tail base. A white face and cheeks with a black ring up to the sturdy beak. ♂ has a black cap with a red neck marking, ♀a black cap with a black neck marking. The young have a red cap with a black edge. Drums in winter. Both ♂ and ♀ drum while courting. Looks for small bugs under tree bark but takes eggs from birds as well. ⇔ l. 20-26 cm LA: ≈ The DENDROCOPOS MINOR (Lesser spotted woodpecker) is much smaller and has a red cap and no red rump. ≈ The DENDROCOPOS MEDIUS (Middle spotted woodpecker) is more chubby and with a red or white cap and smaller beak. ≈ The DENDROCOPOS SYRIACUS (Syrian woodpecker) is very similar but lacks the closed black cheek circle.
