Large black woodpecker. The ♂ with a bright red cap from beak to neck. The ♀ has a red neck marking combined with light eyes and beak. The wings are round shaped with fingers. The young are not as shiny black as the adults. Drums loud and often to mark its territory, uses its strong talons to hook onto a tree resting on its tail for balance. Mostly found high in trees and rarely visits ground level. Prefers pine and beech woodland. ⇔ l. 49-50 cm LA: ≈ While flying it is easily confused with the CORVUS CORONE (Carrion crow).
