Brown black marked bunting, ♂ with a black head and beard, white collar and breast, paler outside breeding season. ♀ has a brown head, beard markings and a light breast. A long brown tail with white outside feathers, brown shoulders. Often seen with other buntings. In summer mostly along water shores in vegetation, in winter on stubble fields but always close to water. ⇔ l. 15-16 cm LA: ≈ The ♀ is difficult to separate from other EMBERIZIDAE (Buntings), the ♂ while breeding identifiable by its black head and white collar.
