Speckled back and breast with a long tail, ♂ chestnut coloured back with a grey tail and head, ♀ top surface brown and banded tail. 

On the wing identifiable by its long tail and downwards pointed head. Often seen hovering over meadows or sitting on poles along the road.

The national bird of Belgium.

LA:
≈ The FALCO NAUMANNI (Lesser kestrel) is a little smaller and is not present in Northern Europe. It has similar colouring but the back is not speckled, ♀ is difficult to separate.
≈ The ACCIPITER NISUS (Sparrowhawk) is reversely coloured but inflight difficult to separate, it does not hover though.
