Speckled back and breast with a long tail, ♂ chestnut coloured back with a grey tail and head, ♀ top surface brown and banded tail. On the wing identifiable by its long tail and downwards pointed head. Often seen hovering over meadows or sitting on poles along the road. ⇔ l. 30-38 cm The national bird of Belgium. LA: ≈ The FALCO NAUMANNI (Lesser kestrel) is a little smaller and is not present in Northern Europe. It has similar colouring but the back is not speckled, ♀ is difficult to separate. ≈ The ACCIPITER NISUS (Sparrowhawk) is reversely coloured but inflight difficult to separate, it does not hover though.
