Gidzy
Small wader with a long straight beak, black/brown marked, white belly, indistinct long white stripes on the head and back. A short rust red tail is visible in flight. Prefers wet areas like moor and wet grassland patches. When threatened it keeps hidden, flying away in a zigzag pattern at the last minute. Searches in the mud for worms and small bugs. While courting the ♂ flies very fast downward, the tail feathers start to flutter as it lands close to the ♀. ⇔ l. 23-28 cm LA: ≈ The SCOLOPAX RUSTICOLA (Woodcock) is larger and has wide black cross stripes on its head. ≈ The LYMNOCRYPTES MINIMUS (Jack snipe) is smaller and has yellow stripes on head and back.
