Large dark butterfly with a reddish stripe. The upper wings are dark brown to black and have a yellow-orange line along the rear edge, which seems redder in flight. The underside is remarkably drawn, with many lines and colours, which only stand out when the butterfly is sitting still. Sexes are drawn the same, ♀ becomes larger than ♂. The caterpillar is green with striking horns around the head. In the beginning also horns on the abdomen, which later disappears, then also bluish eye spots visible. Largest butterfly of Europe, lives around the Mediterranean Sea. Eggs and caterpillars live on the Strawberry Tree. Butterflies are also fond of ripe fruit such as figs. ⇔ wsp. 75-90 mm syn. Foxy emperor LA: ≈ The HIPPARCHIA FAGI (Woodland grayling) can be found on the same fruit trees but has a white band instead of a red one in flight.
