Large brown bird of prey with broad square wings with long fingers and bald yellow legs. The head is lighter in colour with a large hooked yellow beak and a whitetail. Young are completely brown. Mostly found in lowlands close to water: seashores, lakes and rivers. It is a persistent hunter, wearing out its prey if necessary. Hunts waterbirds but mostly fish. Can dive under water to catch its prey. ⇔ l. 70-92 cm The largest bird of prey in western Europe. In flight, the wide fingered square wings make it easy to identify. Mainly found in eastern Europe and Asia, in winter young can wander to the west and south Europe.
