Red-brown back, straight tail, hooked beak and dark brown wings. The ♂ has a grey head with a black eye mask, white chin and pink-orange belly, grey rump with a black tail tip and a whitetail under surface. The ♀ is brown with a lighter coloured belly with darker lines up to the tail. Sometimes the ♀ has a grey head, however, the eye mask stays brown. Sitting straight on branches and in bushes on the lookout for prey. Catches insects, small birds and reptiles. Large prey is pierced on thorns to aid in eating or to preserve the food for later. ⇔ l. 16-18 cm Migratory bird to winter in central and South Africa. LA: ≈ The LANIUS EXCUBITOR (Great grey shrike) is larger and has a grey back.
