Light grey back and wings, white belly and head together with black white wing tips. The eyes are yellowish, pink legs and a yellow beak with a red spot. Young are brown marked with a black beak; it takes several years to gain their adult colours. They nest in large colonies and both parents share nesting duties. The young peck at the red beak dot of the parents to indicate they are hungry, after which the parents feed the chicks. ⇔ l. 55-67 cm Originally a coastal bird but adapts easily and recently more often found in cities, partly because it is attracted by our waste. LA: ≈ The LARUS CANUS (Gull) in its summer colours is very similar but much smaller. ≈ The LARUS MICHAHELLIS (Yellow-legged gull) (Larus michahellis) has yellow legs.
