Black brown bird of prey with a grey-brown head and a forked tail with brown crossbands. Young birds are red-brown with light wing edges. Often close to water. They scavenge waste and carrion as well as taking the small live prey. ⇔ l. 56-57 cm Migratory bird breeding in Europe and wintering in Africa. LA: ≈ The CIRCUS AERUGINOSUS (Western marsh harrier) is very similar but has a straight tail.
