A small bird with white rump and belly, the tail is white with a broad black T on the tail edge. The ♂ has a grey head and back with a wide black eye mask with a white edge and a creamy yellow to pink undersurface. The ♀ has a brown back and head and chestnut brown wings, no mask but a white eye stripe. Flies low over the terrain looking for insects and prefers dry sandy areas like desert and moor. Nests are below ground with some bends in the entrance. ⇔ l. 14-16 cm syn. Northern wheatear This migratory bird winters in Africa and breeds in Europe, Greenland, Asia and Alaska. LA: ≈ The SAXICOLA RUBETRA (Whinchat) is smaller and browner on the back and tail.
