Golden oriole
Oriolus oriolus
Orioles
(Oriolidae)
♂
CC-BY-SA 2.0 rights :

A yellow bird with dark wings, ♂ bright yellow with black wings, red beak and eyes with a black marking between the eyes and beak. The ♀ is more yellow-greenish with brown wings, breast a little lighter in colour with darker longer stripes, dark eyes and a pink beak. When older the ♀ becomes more yellow starting to look like the ♂. The marking between the eyes and beak for the ♂ becomes the main discriminator. Finds shelter in treetops and therefore despite its bright colours seldom seen. The singing is beautiful however and very recognisable. The nest is hung on a branch high in the tree and when the young are grown the family stays together until the migration. ⇔ l. 23-25 cm This is the only ORIOLIDAE (Oriole) to breed in Europe. It migrates to tropical Africa in winter. All relatives breed in Asia, Africa and Australia. LA: ≈ The young ♀ look like the PICUS VIRIDIS (Green woodpecker) which has a red crown and is larger.
