Brown sparrow with a chestnut red crown, black cheek marking with a white edge, black croup, light grey belly and a brown back. Marked wings with white stripes and a white collar. More a suburban than a city bird that prefers orchards, hedges and shrubbery. Very noisy in groups, making nests close to each other in hedges or preferably tree cavities. They stay clear of people as they are very shy. ⇔ l. 13-14 cm Not a migratory bird but with lots of snow, they migrate looking for food. LA: ≈ The PASSER DOMESTICUS (House sparrow) is a little larger and more prevalent in towns. It has grey cheeks and a grey (♂) or light brown (♀) crest.
