Grey-brown round bird with an orange-red head and tail. The coverts have a white edge giving a distinct stripe marking. The ♂ has a half round red-brown marking on its breast. The ♀ has a white edge on its grey cap. Young are more brownish on their breast. Couples form in winter and outside breeding season they live in groups. When the young are grown they form groups again. When disturbed they run, they don't like to fly. ⇔ l. 28-30 cm Fairly common but seldom seen, they can hide well in grass and grain fields.
