A small tit with a large black head with white cheeks, on the back of the head a white marking. Its back and wings are dark grey coloured, the undersurface is lighter with a yellow glow on its belly. Nests in low-level tree cavities, even on at ground level if nothing else is available. Prefers pine forests when looking for insects. ⇔ l. 10-12 cm syn. PARUS ATER Can migrate. Subspecies often have a yellowish glow on head or back. LA: ≈LOPHOPHANES CRISTATUS (Crested tit) has a black line on its white cheek, the crest is not always clearly visible. ≈The POECILE PALUSTRIS (Marsh tit) and POECILE MONTANUS (Willow tit) have less pronounced colours.
