A sturdy black bird with a fan-shaped tail. The large beak has a yellow base and a hooked tip. While breeding a white marking on the flank as well as a white throat and cheeks can be seen, which fade later. The young are initially brown with white markings.

Dives in the water to hunt for fish, using the backward pointed feet to paddle. The feathers are not watertight, this would hamper the diving, after the dive they have to dry. This is done by sitting on a high point with wide open wings, sometimes several in a row.

A common local bird divided into a marine subspecies,  PHALACROCORAX CARBO CARBO, living at coastal sites with its nest on steep cliffs.
And a continental subspecies, PHALACROCORAX CARBO SINENSIS, breeding by fresh water, in trees, reeds or at ground level.

LA:
The various PHALACROCORACIDAE (Cormorants) all have the same shape with a base colour of black or dark brown. They differ in details and location.
