A Fowl like bird, the ♂ has a copper brown body with green head and neck and a red face with wattles, yellow eyes and a white collar. Its tail is long, pointed and very distinctive in flight. The ♀ is yellowish brown with dark markings and a much shorter tail.

Can be found in forest and open areas, adapts its food to the location, being seeds or small reptiles. The ♀ cares for the young while the ♂ has multiple females and does not visit the offspring. The alarm call is loud and immediately repeated by other pheasants nearby.

Introduced in west Europe in ancient times and has adapted well. Through breeding programs and reintroduction, a variety with less bright colours has been developed. Not a migratory bird living at forest edges and close to farms.

≈ The ♀ looks like the LYRURUS TETRIX  (Black grouse) hen which is smaller and has a shorter tail. 
≈ The PERDIX PERDIX (Grey partridge) is much more grey and much smaller.
