Small grey-brown bird with a black head and chin with white cheeks. Pale white breast and beige belly. A specific call and singing. Pairs stay together even in winter when they form groups with other pairs. ⇔ l. 11-12 cm syn. PARUS PALUSTRIS LA: ≈ The POECILE MONTANUS (Willow tit) is very similar but less shiny and has a white marking on its wings. The singing is less specific though. ≈ The PERIPARUS ATER (Coal tit) is brighter with a wider black chin and a white marking on its neck. ≈ The SYLVIA ATRICAPILLA (Blackcap) is completely grey with a black cap, the ♀ has a red cap.
